LOOK WHAT I COULD FIND vol 106
" Covers To Die For vol 14" - 16 garage covers from the vaults of Vinyl-topia

In The Trashcan Records       GEM106
"Feverish cavemen, crazy horses, bossa nova potatoes and other fiends from beyond the grave..."

1. no good woman - the gravedigger V

Originally a 1967 release by The Tree on Barvis Records, this 1984 version by The Gravedigger V is unbelievable. Of course it's also on their garage anthem album "All black and hairy".

9. lie detector - the gorgons

One of the best songs Billy Childish has written for his Headcoats, in the hands of these Mighty Caesars copycats from France. Backing vocals by Bruce Brand, the Headcoats drummer. A 1992 release on Dull City.

2. what a way to die - magnitude 3

In 1965 it was recorded by The Pleasure Seekers featuring a 15-years old Suzi Quatro. Only a 1000 copies on clear red wax by this Japanese trio with their debut single for Giant Claw Records in 1993. None of the three tracks on this EP appear on their Giant Claw album "Boost out". See vol 108 for another song from this release.

10. ain't it hard - the fiends

The Electric Prunes' original version cannot be equalled. Still this Vancouver, Canada band has delivered a fabulous recording, released in 1993 by Primitive Records. See vol 48 for the unforgettable flipside.

3. doin' me in - the mourning after

Sorry, my mistake. This is NOT the song we know from Gonn, but a self-penned snotty garage goodie, straight from Sheffield, England. A 1994 Detour release.

11. fever - eggs

I really can't tell how many "Fever" versions I own. In 1993 Eggs recorded their quite traditional version for Jade Tree, like a minimal Cramps version on a gloomy Sunday evening. From Washington DC.

4. fight fire - the embrooks

Noboby knows The Fantastic Deejays or The Golliwogs (= pre-Creedence Clearwater Revival) who first recorded this song in 1966. Three decades later The Embrooks recorded a terrific version of this Fogerty song. The A-side can be found on vol 105.

12. crazy horses - the mortals

Nobody likes The Osmonds while everybody seems to enjoy "Crazy horses".  The Mortals (do you know their fab debut album "Ritual dimension of sound"?) recorded their version for Estrus Records in 1992, as flipside to a wild version of MC5's "Looking at you".

5. brother the man - the cynics

Simply the best song We The People ever recorded and here you get a nasty rendition by garage kings The Cynics on the B-side of their 1992 Screaming Apple single "I want it all". See vol 84 and also vol 16 for their version of Gonn's "Doin' me in"

13. bossa nova baby birkin - baby birkin

A sizzling rendition of Elvis' Bossa nova baby" from 1997 by these three English girls and two guys, featuring Headcoatee "Bongo" Debbie Green. Only to be found on this 7" sampler on Nana Records from London.

6. potato chip - the paranoiacs

Three covers and one original on this EP from 1986, yet unreleased until 2000. In 1965 the Shadows Of Knight's original version was released on a 5" flexi-disc. Who were these Belgian garage punk lovers? See vols 16 and 54 for more songs from this Twist Records release.

14. time bomb - the bomboras

A surf rock classic played superbly by ex-members of The Witchdoctors, The Finks,… and future Fuzztones, Go-Nuts, Lords Of Altamont, Sleepwalkers,… Not only an important band in garage rock's history, but also a fabulous outfit! The two other songs on this marvelous Dionysus single can be found on vol 102.

7. never alone - the vipers

Yes, this is the Five Canadians track given a NY treatment in 1984, the year of the garage rock revival. A fantastic Midnight Records release.

15. eisbaer - prisonshake

In 1991 this US quartet recorded an unbelievable post-rock version of new wave synth classic from Grauzone. A Scat Records release from Cleveland, Ohio.

8. be a caveman - avengers

This is a Dutch band covering a song by a band called… The Avengers. Arrogant? Yes! But why not… it's a excellent attempt to capture that savage sound. A 1987 release on Orgie Records, a Kelt subsidiary.

16. pretty vacant - lagarto & safety pins

See vols 71 and 36 for more info on Lagarto. On this SexPistols song he was backed by the Safety Pins in 1999; also released on Electro Harmonix. Solid Spanish version of the 1977 punk rock anthem.
