LOOK WHAT I COULD FIND vol 97
"Pogo dancing 5" - 16 unsung heroes from 25 years of punk rock

In The Trashcan Records       GEM097
"3 American  and 1 Japanese versus 12 European punk outfits from 1976 till 1999..."

1. remote control - the clash

This is a killer two-sider. The best known track is "London's burning", which can be found on numerous compilations. That's why you get "Remote control", also a track on their first album in 1977.

9. unsung heroes pt11 - angelic upstarts

A completely forgotten B-side by Mensi's band Angelic Upstarts. It's 1980 and England is angry, very angry, still very angry. Punk rock is dead? No way, not in 1980, not in Mensi's world.

2. swallow my pride - ramones

One of my fave Ramones tunes from 1977! B-side is their anthem "Pinhead" and also a live version of "Let's dance".  It was also issued as B-side of "Sheena is a punk rocker".  And of course it also appeared on their second album "Leave home".

10. you're guilty too - the no-talents

1977 punk rock twenty years too late. An Incognito Reocrds release from 1997. Led by Cecilia Meneau who later formed ye-ye garage band Cecilia & Ses Ennuis. She was also behind Wild Wild Records.

3. live in a car - u.k. subs

"C.I.D." is, next to "Stranglehold", their best known recording, although my fave will always be "Endangered species". This is CID's flipside, a great 1978 punk rocker on the Pinnacle label.

11.  situations - crispy nuts

Japanese hardcore garage punk outfit from Tokyo with female vocalist, Momoko. I discovered this band through a splitsingle on Demolition Derby Records with Electric Frankenstein from the same year 1998. Wrench Records from London issued this one.

4. leave me alone - angelic upstarts

Thomas Mensforth aka Mensi was a big Sham 69 fan. Hence Jimmy Pursey as producer. "Leave me alone" is powerful punk straight in the face, as flip to their 1979 anthem "I'm an upstart".

12. addict - the flying medallions

A 1999 release on Yassaba Records from London. Late 90s grunge meets indierock by this outfit that had a lot of released on Acupuncture. I believe this was their final release.

5. nasty - the damned

The best punk song by these punk pioneers after their third album "Machine gun etiqette" in 1979. They lost their punk attitude in the 80s, but then delivered this great tune. Released as flipside to "Thanks for the night" on their own Damned Records in 1984.

13. dead lazy - the stukas

Three 45s were issued and then it was over. Two of them went on as The Autographs. New wave punk outfit from the UK. This is a 1977 release on Sonet.

6. telephone numbers - u.k. subs

Blue wax B-side of "Tomorows girls". It's one of their fastest and fiercest tunes from those early days, recorded in 1979 for Gem Records. See also vol 4.

14. out of town - skids

In 1979 it was coupled with "Masquerade", a single on Virgin; a year later it reappeared on the album "The absolute game", produced by Bill Nelson and John Leckie. One of Scotland's best known new wave bands, that started as a punk band in 1977. Later The Skids evolved into the better known Big Country.

7. mars bars - the undertones

Another Undertones classic was "Jimmy Jimmy"; I advise you to flip over that 45. "Mars bars" is a perfect poppy punk rock tune from 1979 about a candy bar. Lollipop punk from Northern Ireland on the Sire label.

15. dreams are real - images

Hardcore punk quintet from Maryland with this 1988 EP on DSI Records. It was their sole 45. One album would follow and then they broke up.

8. thin white line - the avengers

Seminal, yet short-lived, US punk rock group formed in 1977. They sound like the American version of The Adverts with a girl singing, the great Penelope Houston. After the demise of The SexPistols they recorded a song with Steve Jones, the Pistols' guitarist. See also vol 96 for the flipside of this 1983 release on C.D.Presents, although recorded in 1978.

16. going out wiva punk - the punkettes

Punk parody from the UK in 1977 by a mystery band called The Punkettes. A Response Records release.
