"Hell city phantom eyes" - 16 exciting escapes from reality

In The Trashcan Records       GEM094
"Spinning 45s like these is a little trip to heaven for me..."

1. demonologist - alice donut

It's never wrong to start with a B-side. The other side is "My boyfriend's back". The trashy post-punk guitar sound of Alice Donut is their trademark and hardly ever sounded better than on this Alternative Tentacles release from 1990.

9. baby, let's grow old - the hi-fives

Powerpop from this nice foursome I saw once live on stage in Belgium when I was the aftershow deejay. Their favourite band was Thee Milkshakes, although they obviously listened a lot to the Buzzcocks as well. Without any difficulties they mix 60s beat with powerpop in this 1996 Lookout release.

2. eyes - yard trauma

It's their toughest sounding 45, almost hard rock instead of garage rock. Featuring Lee Joseph on bass and Joe Dodge on vocals. A 1990 Dionysus release.

10. a little trip to heaven (on the wings of a boar - young fresh fellows

Powerpop from this excellent quintet that was around for more than a decade. Formed around 1983 they released a dozen albums and even more singles, this one from 1992 on Screaming Apple.

3. the satellites are spinning - ugly papas

Originally a Sun Ra song but here covered by a Belgian outfit. It sounds like a spacey Theatre Of Hate in an early 70s mood. A Getter Records EP from 1990.

11.  spannend - arbeid adelt!

In 1990 the Belgian pop scene was dead, buth this trio made a comeback, unsuccessfully. Luc Van Acker had his moment of glory with Revolting Cocks and returned to Marcel and Jan to reform Arbeid Adelt!

4. monsterland - sunburn

1500 copies were pressed of this 1991 single on Serial Killer, a Birmingham record label. The  only other Serial Killer release I know is by Lung. Grunge rockers who released about 10 singles and one album. In 1990 they were still known as Smile.

12. harry in orbit - lou hoeffner trio minus one

"Derrick 2000", a weird version of the most successful German crimi television series, is available on other comps. "Harry in orbit" isn't. A spacey, moog surf instrumental about Herr Derrick's sidekick, Harry Klein. These Swiss brothers later transformed into Stereophonic Space Sound Unlimited. A 1997 release on Sheep Records, their debut. See vol 100 for their finest recording.

5.i'm on a drunk - urge overkill

A Chicago noise rock group formed in 1985 and often compared with Killdozer, Jesus Lizard, Butthole Surfers; loved by Steve Albini. "(I'm on a) drunk" can only be found on this B-side of "Ticket to L.A.", a 1990 release on Touch And Go Records.

13. separator - the elevators

Hammond groove acid-jazz instrumental on Blow Up from 1998. I believe this combo hailed from Finland.

6. hell city, hell - supersuckers

Formed in 1988 and 4 years later they delivered this beautiful slice of Sub Pop punk rock, straight from a Tucson, Arizona garage. Bassist Eddie Spaghetti, born Ed Daly, is the leader and singer of the band.

14. 52 miles to terror - the mighty gordinis

Guitarist Ricky used to play with The Vice Barons and can briefly recall their sound on this 1999 instrumental spy theme. One of their best efforts in their short-lived career. See also vol 18.

7. ma solitude et moi - the splash 4

French garage punk outfit from Paris on Lookout!Records in 1999. They were active in the second half of the 90s. Singer Lili Zeller founded Royal Records and was also active in The No-Talents, a girl punk band which included Cecilia Meneau.

15. phantoma - the silver bullets

Surf rock from Finland on Gas Records. Do they have more output? I only know this release from 1996. See vol 100 for more.

8. strangeways - thee overdose

Poppy punk rock trio on Yassaba Records from London, 1999. I know they recorded another single in 1997 for the same record label.

16. bone waltz - bogeymen

Early 90s pre-Percolators weirdoobilly tune by a young Axel Gieseking and Udo. I assume Odius was their own record label.
