"Wild women 9" - 16 savage songs by sultry seducing cavegirls

"Take me tonight, said the little sister to the hot city boy; one way or another age doesn't count when money talks..."

1. beg borrow & steal - the pack bold girls

Mouse & The Traps played this one in 1967 already amongst many other garage punk groups. Here is from France The Pack Bold Girls with a terrific fuzzed-out rendition of a song that's been very popular in the Dutch 60s scene for as long as I can remember.

9. photo, photo - too much

It's not really a cover song, but it almost sounds exactly like "Pogo pogo", the B-side of "Ca plane pour moi". The composer and the producer are also names you encounter with Plastic Bertrand's debut single. Hardly anything is known about these two French singing Belgian punk girls. A 1978 Pathé release.

2. less of me - teenage jesus & the jerks

If there was one big influence on Sonic Youth, it must've been this first band of Lydia Lunch. She sings and wrote both songs on this 45 and also plays the guitar. Also James Chance was once a member, both big names in the New York No Wave scene. Early 90s Cramps Jim Sclavunos was also part of the band and was active in Grinderman, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, 8-eyed Spy and many more. Lydia "Lunch" Koch was an actress as well in several Richard Kern productions and writes poetry for spoken word events. The A-side "Orphans" is the best song from the NY No Wave movement. A 1978 release on Migraine Records.

10. age - x-ray spex

B-side of "Germ free adolescents", a 1978 release that was the least punk rock sounding of them all. Is this really the band that gave us "Oh bondage up yours"? Yes, it is. And both sides were actually written by Poly Styrene as well.

3. little sister - moonstruck

French grunge girls from Montpellier who were around from 1992 till 1997. This is from their first 45 for Thunderbaby Records in 1995. See also vol 72.

11. object refuse reject abuse - dirt

1981 anarcho-punk on Crass Records, their political and musical teachers. Dirt stands for Death Is Reality Today. Deno (she was also known as Piglit Warrior) and Gary are the singers of the band. Later Gary founded Stratford Mercenaries with Crass' vocalist Steve Ignorant. Here they are with their first release, one year before their highly recommended album on Crass, "Never mind Dirt, here's the bollocks".

4. touch - lori & the chameleons

An own composition on this band's first release in 1979 on Stiff Records. Synth-pop with a twist. See also vol 70 for their follow-up single.

12. humane - vice squad

Screaming girl, ultra-fast, distorted guitars and punk lyrics,… and as Riot City was from Bristol as well, it was easy for them to have six 45s released between 1980 and 1982. Check out vol 72 for another Riot City release.

5. placebo effect - siouxsie & the banshees

The B-side of "Overground", a 1984 Wonderland single, but it first appeared five years earlier on their second studio album "Join hands". Enjoy the effect of placebo in a nuthouse.

13. headcoat girl - thee headcoatees

Splitsingle with Thee Headcoats who play the fantastic instrumental "Lakota woman" (see vol 43). The girls are singing about themselves here. And they gave endless inspiration to The Perverts, a Dutch outfit who recorded "I'm in love with the Headcoat girl" a little while later. Damaged Goods issued this in 1992.

6. take me tonight - kim wilde

Marty and Ricki Smith helped Kim to her music career and they became Wilde. Sugar sweet pop music is what followed and one must agree that some of those chart toppers are good songs. Here's a B-side nobody seems to remember. From 1982 by a Wilde woman.

14. jump jack jump - the 5.6.7.8's

B-side of "Continental hop", their 1996 release on Time Bomb from Osaka, Japan. These three girls know how to rock your soul and jump your bones.

7. money talks - penetration

My favourite Penetration song is this 1977 punk killer, sung by the lovely Pauline Murray who pursued a solo career in 1980. Their next 45 can be found on vol 12.

15. celebration - siouxsie & the banshees

1980 B-side of "Happy house", one of their best known recordings. It never reappeared on an album and that explains why nobody seems to remember this tune.

8. hot city boy - the bobbyteens

In 1997 the Bobbyteens released their second 45 on Super Teem. "Hot city boy" is leather clad young girl teen angst and love sickness in a torn up jacket.

16. one way or another - blondie

"In the flesh" is a personal fave of mine and so is the flipside "One way or another". It regained attention by the movie Coyote Ugly. 1978 is Blondie's most interesting year.
