LOOK WHAT I COULD FIND vol 75
"Forgotten gems 2" - 16 completely forgotten B-sides

In The Trashcan Records       GEM075
"Everything changed when I flipped over the single; I went all the way down, in the flesh..."

1. gokula - kula shaker

A real gem, hidden as a bonus track on a 3-song EP from 1997 by this UK band, who combine Britpop fused with Eastern psychedelia. Huge in the UK, but almost completely ignored in Belgium. Early member Jay Darlington later joined Oasis and Beady Eye.

9. feelers - the brian jonestown massacre

Tangible Records and Stanton Park Records co-released this 45 in 1996. An Indian flavoured Britpop tune by a San Francisco band is no guarantee for success. Sounds a bit like '68 Beatles.

2. fused - the bedbugs

York indie pop outfit that released this 3-track EP on their own label in 1992. "Fused" and "Catherine wheel" are the remaining tracks.

10. vishnu - blancmange

New Romantic synth pop heroes who managed to put this Bollywood drenched ode on the B-side of "That's love that it is" in 1983. Asha Bhosle in a New Romantic mood?

3. everything changed - the charlatans

Co-released by Situation Two and Dead Dead Good in 1990. Yes, this is the fantastic flipside to their  first - and hit - release "The only one I know". Great psychedelic indie pop by these Britpop geniuses, founded by Martin Blunt a year earlier.

11. hiding - fischer z

After a quiet intro of about a minute all hell breaks loose on this unknown B-side. Of course we all know the band and sometimes it's worthwile to flip over their hitsingles to discover what they are "hiding". A United Artists release from 1980.

4. all the way down - the primitives

This time it's not Tracy Tracey singing, but guitarist P.J. Court with his dark Ian McCullouch-like voice. Echo-laden fuzz guitars and producer Paul Sampson's bass hooks are the keystones of this dreamy song the Reid brothers (of The Jesus And Mary Chain) forgot to write.

12. we're so beautiful - my bloody valentine

One of the most prolific bands in the shoegaze genre that emerged after The Jesus And Mary Chain's "Psychocandy". Singer-guitarist Kevin Shields even teamed up with ex-JAMC drummer Bobby Gillespie's Primal Scream in 1998. "We're so beautiful" was recorded in 1986. This is the 1991 reissue on Recreation.

5. in the flesh - blondie

Slow? Ballad? Lame? NO! Debbie Harry never sounded sexier! It's 1978 and many young boys had a weak spot for the platinum blonde New York singer. I first heard this song when I bought "Denis" and accidentally flipped over the single. Later I bought the first single release b/w "One way or another" from 1977.

13. told you so - the undertones

"Wednesday week" was not a popular release and I can only agree. I prefer the almost rock 'n' roll sounding flipside "Told you so" from 1980. It was an outtake from their "Hypnotized" sessions for Sire.

6. i almost touched you - the primitives

1987 and 1988 were their top years. In 1989 they started to fade away. Their two first albums "Lovely" and "Pure" are pristine pop classics, while their third and last "Galore" isn't. This B-side of "Secrets" is a non-album track and a perfect proof of the song writing abilities of guitarist-singer P.J. Court.

14. smog - rita mitsouko

In 1987 the duo left Cologne and moved to New York. Nothing interesting came out from that period, except this B-side of "Mandolino city", which can also be found on their third studio album "Marc & Robert" from 1988.

7. i am (so sorry) - the yéhyéhs

Marcel VanThilt (from Arbeid Adelt!), Bart Peeters and Hugo Matthysen (pre-Clement Peerens Explosition) with a fourth member formed a band to release one single: "The 7 kings of rock 'n' roll" which features more than 100 times the word "Yéh", hence the band name. This is from the flipside. Weird Belgian novelty pop from 1986.

15. give me an inch - hazel o'connor

This is the 1982 live version of "Give me an inch" that first came out in 1980. Here it is on the B-side of "Calls the tune". She is still active and recording albums, although she never could equal her debut album "Breaking glass". Back then she had platinum blonde dyed hair and black mascara eyes, a Coronation Street version of Soo Catwoman meets Siouxsie Sue.

8. je t'aime - the photos

Short-lived punky new wave pop band on Epic, released in 1980. Wendy Cruise aka Wendy Wu aka Wendy Yates is the singer here.

16. worth to live - cinq chevaux

Belgian new wave synth pop from 1983, B-side of "Problems?" on the absolutely unknown Honolulu Records. Check out vol 6 for their first 45.
