LOOK WHAT I COULD FIND vol 72
"Wild women 7" - 16 tattooed teen girls and cherry-poppin' punkettes

In The Trashcan Records       GEM072
"Blind attack on girl who was told to shut up after a firecracker got out of reach and pulled her to bits..."

1. out of reach - vice squad

Rebecca "Beki Bondage" Bond was a wild girl when she formed Vice Squad in 1978. Four years later she was one of punk's leading ladies in England, not bad for a Bristol broad. Their first 45 can be found on vol 82.

9. firecracker - the bobbyteens

Two from The Trashwomen, one fom The Mummies and another girl formed The Bobbyteens, girl trash punk galore.  Too bad it's only 1 minute and 16 seconds? Don't listen then to "Hey Roxy", which is only 1:08.

2. cherry pop - the spastics

See vol 62 for the Spoiled Brats, the previous band of Elka Zolot, who also formed The Trashwomen earlier, and also with Lisa Schenberg, formerly with The Bobbyteens, which was also a Trashwomen spin-off. Ian McLean was also a member of The Spoiled Brats. The Spastics were a terrific girl punk band from the mid-90s and hailed from San Francisco. This was their sole release for Rip Off Records in 1996.

10. dirty work - poison girls

Additional vocals by Eve Libertine of Crass. The rest of the vocals are by the 45-year old Vi Subversa, the mother of two members of Rubella Ballet and Fatal Microbes. Vi was born Frances Sokolov Sansom who formed  anarchopunk band Poison Girls. Most of the bands output was issued by Xntrix, Small Wonder and Crass Records, including this 1980 single.

3. le beau tétard sur son cigare - les marylènes

Now it’s time to mix “Ca plane pour moi” and “Pogo pogo”, both sides of Plastic Bertrand's first single: add a sax and take three bubblegum girls and change the lyrics once more: then you get the hilarious but enjoyable version by Les Marylenes. The B-side is the instrumental version. A 1978 Vogue release.

11. blind attack - conflict

"The house that man built" is their first and only EP on Crass Records, reissued 13 years later on Mortarhate. Second best known anarcho-punk band that started on the record label of the best known. Crass' singer Steve Ignorant even became their singer years after Crass' demise in 1984. "Blind attack" is one of 4 songs on this seminal punk release.

4. pull to bits - siouxsie & the banshees

Sometimes labeled "Pulled to bits" it was also a live favourite to many fans. Released in 1979 as B-side for "Playground twist". In 1983 a fantastic live version appeared on double album "Nocturne".

12. let's submerge - x-ray spex

Pink vinyl flipside to "Identity", perhaps their best known song, from 1978. With Susan Whitby aka Lora Logic's saxophone and 20-years old Poly Styrene's vocals (born Marianne Elliott). By the time this single was released, Lora Logic had already left the band.

5. tell that girl to shut up - holly & the italians

Transvision Vamp turned this 1979 recording into a big hit in 1988. Holly Beth Vincent wrote the song herself. The flipside of this Oval release is a cover of the Dixie Cups 1964 hit "Chapel of love".

13. the one that get away - yum yum tree

Named after an Ozric Tentacles album and song  (I can't imagine these two girls and two guys from New York City knew there was also this song by Bobby Bland from 1971). 90s punk trash on girl-label Thunderbaby Records in 1997.

6. shakti (the meaning of within) - monsoon

Known for their excellent version of The Beatles' "Tomorrow never knows", this song reveals their interest in blending Indian tabla and sitar sounds with early 80s keyboards and guitar sounds. Singer was the 14-year old Sheila Chandra. Lack of commercial success meant the end of the band after a mere 22 months.

14. hurricane - moonstruck

From the south of France came this all-girl grunge combo, including Patou who left in 1997 to form Rhinocerose (remember their 2005 indie hit "Bitch"). Second of two releases on Thunderbaby Records in 1996.

7. automatic love - thee headcoatees

While the A-side features a Kinks song, this side is pure Billy Childish Medway beat garage. A 1994 release on Munster Records from Spain.

15. tattoo - siouxsie & the banshees

B-side of "Dear prudence", this 1983 recording shows another side of Siouxsie and Budgie. An etheral jungle flavoured tune for a moonless night around a bonfire.

8. miso hornie - the budget girls

Damaged Goods issued this sexy tune in 1999. Teri and Christen are The Budget Girls and are backed by two Headcoats and two other guys. Their "On a tight budget" album I can recommend as well. I love it when I go to bed and hear a girl whisper in my ear "Miso hornie".

16. christmas boogie - the ranch girls & the hill-billy boogiemen

Nope, this is not 1949, it's 1994. A Christmas hillbilly boogie tune by these two country girls straight from their ranch in Rotterdam Netherlands. Their also Dutch backing band is The Hill-Billy Boogiemen from Utrecht. One of the girls went solo as Miss Mary Ann. Released on Home Brew Records. See also vol 18.
