LOOK WHAT I COULD FIND vol 70
"Spy in space" - 16 special agents from Mars vs. Andromeda spies

In The Trashcan Records       GEM070
"As a spy from Andromeda I am a lonely spy; please send me special agent whore to make a man out of me ..."

1. spy vs spy - the boardwalkers

I can't help it. I'm a big fan of Dionysus Records. That's how I discovered this band. And I have a weak spot for spy tunes. Excellent secret agent surf instrumental.

9. the k.g.b. made a man out of me - the barracudas

A Wills-Gluck composition from 1981, their best year (ever listened to their wonderful "Drop outd with The Barracudas" album?). Where garage rock meets power pop, you'll find Jeremy Gluck and his three band mates. This is the flipside to "I can't pretend", released on Zonophone.

2. eye spy - the disturbed

Self-penned two-sider on Detour Records from 1997. A Toe-Rag Studios product and the result is: less mod and more garage than we are used to hear from Detour. All those Vox instruments complete the garage rock feeling.

10. one spy too many - the cybermen

A  groovier modjazz sound than what I was used to hear from these Scandinavians as if they suddenly discovered James Taylor Quartet. This magnificent instrumental was released in 1995 on Detour.

3. i spy for the fbi - the untouchables

A 1985 rendition of soul classic "I spy for the FBI" on Stiff Records. The Untouchables hailed from Los Angeles and formed in 1981 and have existed for about a decade. A Stiff Records release.

11. sound of the silencer - the hypnomen

My favourite Hypnomen track was recorded in 1997 for Gas Records. Secret agent theme for an underground spy movie score. See also vols 13, 23 and 43.

4. spy vs spy - robert johnson & the punchdrunks

In my top 10 of spy themes! Don't call this a surf instrumental by Sweden's finest instro combo. A Strange Edge release from 1997.

12. special agent whore - the x-rays

Punk garage trash from Notthingham, England by The X-Rays who love whores. "Whores are cool" is the title of EP, released in 1998 on Saddle Tramp.

5. the lonely spy - lori & the chameleons

On vol 22 you'll find the flipside. Here is the terrific A-side, released in 1980 on Korova. Excellent girlie post-punk as a female version of The Teardrop Explodes.

13. big green thing - the fender benders

No-wave song with a serious nod to Devo from 1979 on Sticky Label Records, which might have been their own label.

6. 007 theme - the green hornets

Yes, the James Bond Theme reinvented once more. Morris rules on this track with his "Bontempi" organ. Released in 1998 by Mouthy Records. See also vol 25.

14. groovy andromeda - skooby

If you love Big Boss Man and side-project The Bongolian, you'll love this outfit, formed by the same guy, drummer Nasser Bouzida. They recorded two full albums, both for Funky Ass Records, while this funky groovy instrumental 45 was released by Detour Records in 1996.

7. hawaii five o - jack & the rippers

Terrific 1995 version of the second best known secret agent theme. Also on Killer Records they released a fabulous album "Live at the Casbah". A great mix of surf and rock 'n' roll.

15. alien baba - the astronauts

If you love 60's surf, you'll love "Ali baba". Here is the German version retitled "Alien baba" by The Astronauts on their "Wassamatta u" EP on J.P. Gutrock's Repent Records from San Francisco. Other tracks on this EP are "Cruel space", "Meteor twist" and "Jupiter doodle".

8. theme from the persuaders - robert johnson & the punchdrunks

And also the flipside is here: a blistering version of John Barry's "Theme from The Persuaders". It was their second single. At least 10 albums would follow.

16. weekend on mars - the cramps

Jett Powers changed his name to P.J. Proby in the 60s, but in 1957 he recorded "Go, girl, go", the blueprint for "Weekend on Mars", which appeared on the live album "Smell of female" in 1983. It also was released as a 4x7" box set on New Rose Records.
