1.
l'aventurier - indochine Second 45 from one of France's most successful bands of the 80s, written by the two founders of the new wave outfit, Dominique Nicolas and Nicola Sirkis, joined by his twin brother Stéphane Sirkis who died in 1999. From 1982 on Ariola. |
9. je suis swing - the domino's Their version of the Duke Ellington classic "It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing" was a chart topper in France. Yet it is a Belgian rock 'n' roll combo. On the flipside of this 1992 Big Bang release there is this catchy tune "Je suis swing". Two decades later singer Patrick Ouchène would represent Belgium on the Eurovision Song Contest with his new combo, Copycat. |

2.
le pacha - les malades This is not the same song Jean Constantin recorded in 1958. 25 years later Les Malades released this Indochine-styled ska pop tune for Label X Records in 1983. |
10. ou est le cahier - thee cybermen A year after their "Got a groove EP" the trashpunk garage band from Dyfed, Wales, are back with another killer release. This time they sing in French. A 1995 Cave Records release. |
||
3.
metro (c'est trop) - telephone In 1977 this song appeared on their eponymous debut album and as did the B-side of their first single. A year later it was granted an own release, although slightly altered. This French rock outfit was quite popular in France. They split in 1986 after a ten years' existence. The early years are interesting because of the obvious punk influences. |
11. fais attention - the kartoons These Italian garage beat boys play the French version we know by Ronnie Bird in a splendid manner. Recorded in 1996 and released one year later by Wiped Out Records from Chambéry, France. |

4.
quand le film est triste - 2 belgen Hectic synth-pop from Belgium, a 1982 Antler Records release. The flipside contains an early version of "Lena", which became a big hit in Belgium three years later when it was re-recorded. See vol 56 for their next single. |
12. allez danser! - les rats French punk outfit with a love for rockabilly. In 1987 Gougnaf Mouvement released it as flip to "Le borgne", but it already appeared as B-side of "Violence" in 1986 on the same label. Formed in 1983 near Paris. |

5.
troisième dimenstion - lou & the hollywood bananas This is far away from his "Kingston Kingston". French nonsensical punky pop tune on RKM in 1981 by Lou Depryck of "Ca plane pour moi" fame. Recorded by sound engineer Alan Ward aka Elton Motello. |
13. les dragueurs - les dragueurs "Poor fool" are they singing, this Canadian quartet from Montréal. Garage beat from 1997 on Teen Sound Records from Italy. See also vol 26. |
||
6.
main dans la main - elli & jacno This reminds me so much of Lio's early work. It's their debut 45 on Vogue from 1980, after disbanding Stinky Toys, France's best known punk band. |
14. sans compromis - charge 69 Very first record by this French punk band from Metz. In 1995 issued by Combat rock. "Sans compromis" is slightly better than "Patchwork, "Avancer" and "Johnny good boy", the three other tracks on this EP. |

7.
suite sixtine - lio B-side of "Sage comme une image", this reminds me of Elli Medeiros. When she was 6, she moved from Portugal to Belgium. Born Wanda Maria Ribeiro Furtado Tavares de Vasconcelos she chose the short Lio (from a Barbarella comic) and was an instant success in Belgium and in France when she released her first single in 1979 at the age of 17. It was "Banana split". Her sweet Europop/synth-disco songs were catchy enough to sell millions of copies. This is from her second single, from 1980. Her sister is also a famous singer and actress, Helena Noguerra. |
15. le temps de l'amour - dutronc Originally by Françoise Hardy and written by her future husband Jacques Dutronc. This 1997 Biens Endommages (=Damaged Goods!) release is a hard to find splitsingle with Baby Birkin. |
||
8.
touche-mi - lolitas If you think, I heard this voice before… yes, it's Françoise Cactus from Stereo Total who was the singer of Lolitas. The band was formed in Berlin, and still Françoise decided to sing in French. Their last album was sung in English and aptly called "My English sucks". Then she left and formed Stereo Total. See also vol 52 for the flipside. A 1987 New Rose Records release. |
16. da da da - duo Parody on Trio's "Da da da" from 1982 on RKM by Duo, a funny project of Jeep Novak and Lou "Ca plane pour moi" Depryck. It's Belgian and not meant to be taken seriously at all. |
