1.
fear of the dark - the meteors If you have fear of the dark, you shouldn't listen to The Meteors at night. It's the B-side of a bizar version of "Johnny remember me". A 1982 release on I.D. Records. |
9. give 'em hell - witchfynde British heavy metal band formed in the mid-70s, but thanks to Ted Nugent and also thanks to punk rock, they got a record deal with Rondelet. Their satanic lyrics got them a small fanbase, sufficient to survive another 5 years until their end in 1984. |

2.
hills have eyes - the meteors Don't you love that movie? Paul Fenech did too and wrote this song about it, safely put away as a B-side on WXYZ Records. In 1982 Nigel Lewis had already left the band to form Tall Boys and The Escalators. |
10. devil men - mad 3 Horror garage surf from Tokyo with their first of two releases on the German label Shot Down Records in 1995. Other releases including labels such as Time Bomb, SFTRI, Giant Claw,... A Mad 3 live show was even wilder than the loudest Apemen or Fifty Foot Combo gig. |

3.
skullhunter-uh-oh - famous monsters Second Estrus EP of this all-girl band, from 1998. "Monster stomp, bite, burn!", "The reluctant ghoul" and "Boo! (hoo hoo)" are the aptly titled remaining tracks. This entry is a monster surf instrumental played by Devil Doll, Vampire Girl and She-Zilla... what's in a name... |
11. devil girl - aliens and strangers Powerpop meets poppunk on Pennsylvania's Space Race Records, released in 1995. "Devil girl" is on the 'attacker side' while A-side "Bloodfix" is on the 'victim side'. |
||
4.
skull and crossbones - gene crazed Sparkle Moore's "Skull and crossbones" recorded by this Italian rocker in 1996, who wanted to be compared with Hasil Adkins and Ron Haydock, his biggest heroes. Released by Crazy Bop Records. |
12. angels and devils - echo & the
bunnymen A band so well known it doesn't need any introduction. Outtake from the "Ocean rain" sessions and chosen as B-side for "Silver", the hit single out of that 1984 chart topping album. |
||
5.
horror beach - the lone surfer & his super pals One guy from The Mummies, one from The Phantom Surfers and two girls from The Trashwomen are this unique collection of San Francisco rock'n' roll underground with only this instrumental live single release of 300 numbered copies. A 1993 Planet Pimp release. |
13. i wanna wear your skin - intoxica I was happy to see them live in Melbourne in 2007 since they only play once a year. Ed Gein would have loved this song. Great Cramps influenced garage rock from down under, released on Giant Claw. See also vol 20. |

6.
horror business - the misfits From their first official release in 1979 and for me their best song. I've never been a Misfits fan and certainly not the poor 90s version. I also don't particularly like Danzig's solo work. But this punk tune kicks ass. |
14. el tortura - the apemen When these Dutchmen first played in Belgium, they were labeled 'monster surf'. They never sounded better than at the Time Warp Festival in Club Zazou in Lier near Antwerp in Belgium. Co-headliner was Sin Alley, including future Triggerfinger frontman Ruben Block. The Apemen played this song "El tortura" and I loved it immediately. |

7.
nightmare - the monsters One of psychobilly's rarest EP's was recorded by a Swiss band from Bern. In those days there was no Voodoo Rhythm Records; no, there was Record Junkie. In 1988 The Monsters sounded like The Meteors in 1981. I got my copy from Beatman himself as a gift after he received the radio interview for Radio Centraal's Ungawa on tape. Years later he included a part of that interview on a compilation album. |
15. an execution - siouxsie & the
banshees No, it's not Cocteau Twins, nor any other 4AD outfit. This is the remarkably strange B-side of their hit single "Cities in dust", released in 1985, by the queen of goth heading for an execution. |
||
8.
diabolique - the strapons Absolutely fantastic horror instrumental, straight from the darkest garage in New Zealand where these three cave girls dwelled. A 1998 EP on Kato Records. See also vol 13. |
16. city hobgoblins - the fall Mark E. Smith's legendary Manchester band The Fall was already a big name in the UK post-punk days of 1980. This flipside on Rough Trade has remained quite unknown to the audience. A Rough Trade release. |
