"Hungry for cool tunes" - 16 suggestions for your next TV dinner

"Chicken bones, cool tomato crab cake and chop suey mushrooms with a sixpack followed by a hangover at a Chinese takeaway..."

1. hungry - the diaboliks

Paul Revere and the Raiders recorded many classic garage tunes, like "Just like me". Babz and the others gave us a fine version. The B-side features another cover song, the Stones' "It's not easy". Released on Thunderbaby in 1998.

9. now your hungers gonna be a coming - thee headcoatees

First released in 1994 as freebie with Italy's Hate Magazine and reissued the following year on Helter Skelter Records from Italy. Not so easy to find single of the  Headcoat girls.

2. dr. mushroom - mudgang

Debut EP from 1986 on Colour Records by this Belgian band from Ghent. "Dr. Mushroom" is a psych garage instrumental with a phenomenal young Steven Janssens on the lead guitar.

10. chinese takeaway - the adicts

Ever had an indigestion after a Chinese takeaway meal? Then you know what this funpunk tune is all about. Released in 1982 by Razor Records from London.

3. booze party - cowboy barnes & his drinking buddies

Three Aces & A Joker was the band that wrote this frat rock'n' roll song, which was a live set favourite of The Cramps in the late 80s and early 90s. That's how it was picked up by Cowboy Barnes, who recorded it with his Drunking Buddies at Toe Rag Studios in London and had it released on Bedrock Records in 1994.

11. cool tomato - cheeseburger

When I was a kid, I didn't like hot tomatoes. This L.A. outfit wrote a song about that in 1995 for Dionysus Records. It's their second of three 45s I know.

4. hangover - the motards

Noise rock oufit from Austin, Texas, with a girl drummer. Local record label Turkey Baster released this "To scare hell out of your neighbors" EP in 1995. In their short existence The Motards recorded some crazy bad-ass trash blasters I won't ever forget. "Hangover" is a personal fave.

12. banana splits - the dickies

Also known as "The tra la la song". So, this punk pop song has nothing to do with Lio's hit single. "Got it at the store" on the flipside is featured on vol 3.

5. sixpack - black flag

One of hardcore's highlights from the earliest days of Black Flag, before anyone ever heard of Henry Rollins. No song for the straight edge punk kids. "I was born with a bottle in my mouth…I know it'll be OK when I get a sixpack in me" says it all. Released on SST Records in 1982.

13. crab cake - the gorgons

There are not so many Gorgons instrumentals, unfortunately as I consider this their best song. Released in 1994 for the Belgian label Demolition Derby. It's swampy horror surf exotica from the south of France with a little help from Sexton Ming who play the maracas.

6. magic potion - the seers

My personal fave recording by this Bristol outfit. A blistering rendition of a 60s popsike classic hidden on a B-side in 1989 on Hedd Records. It was obviously their best recording so far and that's why Cherry Red coupled this song with their previous 45 (see vol 55) in 1990. I'd say... buy that Cherry Red 45.

14. chicken bones - the hermits

Pre-Morticia's Lovers, a band from Piacenza in the north of Italy. This 1993 release was their second. One more would follow before transforming into Morticia's Lovers and later into The Titty Twister Orchestra. Lo-fi garage trash for lovers of Lightning Beatman.

7. incense and peppermints - the adult net

Strawberry Alarmclock's hit single gets a terrific make-over by these Britons, fronted by Brix (ex-The Fall). Release on the famous indie label Beggars Banquet in 1985.

15. chop suey baby - the trashwomen

What's in a (band's) name? The trashiest and sexiest 90s garage trash rock girls ever are back with their final 45 on Pin Up Records from Germany. These San Francisco girls "Invade Chinatown" and gave us "Chop suey baby". See also vol 89 for the fabulous flipside.

8. can't eat - the cannibals

B-side of Chuck Berry's "Nadine". This 45 contains another Berry song: "Sweet little 16". "You can't" is a Mike Spenser original and reminds me of Downliners Sect. I'm pretty sure Mickey Hampshire and Billy Childish were Cannibals fans when they started Thee Milkshakes.

16. cannibal lust - the blowtops

If you're very hungry and you don't like the 15 previous dishes, you can always give in to your cannibal lust. Big Neck Records was from Virginia and released their "Voodoo alley" EP in 1997.
