"Horror tunes 2" - 16 screamers from hell

In The Trashcan Records       GEM058
"Strollin' on Vampire Beach with Peter Cushing doing the graveyard shuffle and the werewolf wiggle..."

1. werewolf - erazerhead

All their releases were on Flicknife Records, a record label founded in 1977 and specialized in Hawkwind and punk, until it disappeared in the arms of Cherry Red. B-side of "Werewolf" is a new version of "Rock 'n' roll zombie".

9. vampire beach - the del-vamps

Garage surf rock from 1994 on Repent, a label run by Phantom Surfer Michael Lucas. I don't know who these guys were. This "Zombie stompin'" EP contains three surf instrumentals.

2. the werewolf wiggle - famous monsters

Named after The Misfits' album? First of two EP's on Estrus Records by two girls and one guy, bringing horror garage trash and monster surf rock. "Blood of Frankenstein", "Monsters over Tokyo" and "Monster girls are go!!!" are the three other tracks on this 1995 release.

10. my daddy is a vampire - the meteors

And yes, this is my favourite Meteors song, written by Nigel Lewis and recorded in January 1981 for the movie "Meteor Madness".

3. werewolf blues - guanabatz

One of the 80s kings of psychobilly, regularly to be seen at The Klub Foot in London, formed by Pip Hancox. I got to know the band thanks to the compilation series "Stompin' at the Klub Foot". "The cave", the A-side from their second 45, has been compiled earlier and is the better side, but "Werewolf blues" is also a typical 80s psychobilly tune in real Meteors style. Released on Big Beat in 1984.

11. dragula - the trashwomen

First of three 45s by these infamous female garage-surf trashers from San Francisco. A Hillsdale Records EP from 1992. See also vol 63.

4. graveyard shuffle - red zebra

Formed in Bruges in 1978 as The Bungalows by Peter Slabbynck who wrote one of Belgium's best known new wave songs: "I can't live in a living room". This is another song from their 1980 3-track EP on their Zebra Records, a long forgotten instrumental tune, written on a gravestone.

12. vampire - channel 4

Only a 1000 copies were printed of this fantastic punky new wave 45. My copy is 403. It's their only release and also the sole release by Ripping Records. From Scotland, 1979.

5. the ripper - the blowtops

Lo-fi trash punk from Buffalo, New York as you have never heard before. In 1998 they released this 45 on a Swedish label, Savage and one or two years later I attended a gig in Belgium and was blown away. "The ripper" will rip the flesh from your bones.

13. prince of darkness - bow wow wow

The blueprint for all their hits, for me, is this one. Every bit of this track tells me it's Bow Wow Wow. 1981 was Adam & The Ants year, while the guys from Bow Wow Wow were once The Ants, who were lured away from Adam Ant by Malcolm McLaren. Sweet revenge...

6. voodoo rhythm - the meteors

The best release ever by The Meteors is this 4-track "Meteor madness" EP on Ace Records in 1981, their debut. The world wasn't ready for this. While The Cramps invented the term Psychobilly, it was The Meteors who created their own sound which would become psychobilly. "Voodoo rhythm" is a perfect description of early psychobilly.

14. viva vlad - the stranglers

In 1987 they recorded a splendid version of The Kinks' "All day and all of the night". This flipside however is something completely different. It reappeared as bonus track on the reissue of "Dreamtime" in 1999. Perfect for a waltz in Dracula's castle.

7. swamp monster - the swamp monsters

"Watching and waiting" is the title of this 4-track EP from 1986, released on Corroboree Records from Australia. A light-weight version of The Lime Spiders.

15. phantom - the sisters of mercy

One of the few instrumentals Andy Taylor aka Andrew Eldritch wrote for his Sisters Of Mercy, perhaps the best known goth rock band with a huge fan base. It was released in 1983 as flipside to "Anaconda" on their own record label, A Merciful Release.

8. peter cushing - surfin' wombatz

I believe they came from England, a psychobilly outfit with a love for Hammer films, hence this tribute to Peter Cushing. It also appeared later on their second album "Dr Satan's house of terror". Recorded for the French record label Pulp Records in 1990.

16. death walk of frankie stein - the vice barons

The first release from this Brussels instro combo was an EP issued by two record labels, Drop Out Records and Drag Beat Records, from 1993. Line-up was Ricky on guitar, Chester on bass, Vince on organ and Marky on drums. It's Ventures meet Davie Allan.
