LOOK WHAT I COULD FIND vol 51
"Covers to die for 9" - 8 songs by 16 bands reinvited

In The Trashcan Records       GEM051
"Misunderstood? No that's the way we sound, mister; we are no dull copycats..."

1. silex pistols - too much

Two Belgian girls hired by Sylvain Vanholme and Yves Lacomblez to exploit their own success of "Ca plane pour moi". I have no idea who these girls were. A fine punk pop exploitation single from 1978. See also vol 91 for the even better flipside.

9. tube disaster - epileptics

This anarcho-punk band transformed into Flux Of Pink Indians and became good friends with Crass. Here they are in 1981 with their first version of "Tube disaster", which became the Flux' trademark song. A Spiderleg release.

2. silex pistols piew piew - hansje

Hansje was the assistant of Ad Visser, the host of the popular Top Pop on Dutch television. She recorded her own version of “Silex pistols”, originally by Too Much, but it was completely based on "Pogo pogo", the flipside of Plastic Bertrand's "Ca plane pour moi". The single was released both in Holland and Belgium with two different sleeves in 1978.

10. tube disaster - flux of pink indians

When I think of Flux, my mind goes to "Tube disaster", one of anarcho-punk's catchiest songs, written by Epileptics which is almost the same band. This "Neu smell" EP was issued by Crass Records in 1981.

3. stop it baby - roy loney & the a-bones

I love The Heard and their 1966 garage killer "Stop it baby". Flamin' Groovies frontman Roy Loney asked The A-Bones to help him out and here they are with a great version from 1993, issued on The A-Bones' own record label Norton.

11. tintarella di luna - jo lemaire + flouze

Her fourth release, on a split single with The Kids in 1979, is an old Italian folk tune, originally recorded in 1959 by Mina and a year later by Bob Azzam as flipside to his "Mustapha". Jo Lemaire from Belgium had a minor hit with her version of Serge Gainsbourg's "Je suis venue te dire que je m'en vais" two years later.

4. stop it baby - the marshmallow overcoat

Roy Loney & the A-Bones gave us terrific version of this garage classic by The Heard, but this one is even better. The band included Timothy Gassen, who was also active in The Purple Merkins and wrote the garage rock encyclopedia The Knights Of Fuzz. A 1986 Dionysus release.

12. tintarella di luna - stereo total

On vol 38 you'll find two other crazy covers from this 1998 Sheep Records EP. Here Françoise Cactus and Brezel Göring abused the Italian folk traditional "Tintarella di luna".

5. writin' on the wall - the psychotic reaction

Mixing mod attitude and teen punk snarls this snotty quintet from Derby presents us a terrific 1999 rendition of the 1966 Five Canadians classic "Writing on the wall". A Detour Records release.

13. teenager in love - erazerhead

Best known from the Dion version, but this is John Leyton's hit version reinvented by punk rock 'n' rollers Erazerhead on Flicknife in 1982. Both sides also appear on their album "The rumble of the east".

6. writing on the wall - the nines

The Nines from Boston recorded a fantastic wild version of garage punk classic "Writing on the wall" in 1994 for Stanton Park Records. David and Evan, ex-Voodoo Dolls asked Linda on drums and Chris on bass for this short-lived project. Chris Miller later turned up as bass player for Muck & The Mires.

14. teenager in love - the radiators

In 1977 this was the B-side of "Sunday world", a 7" on CBS. Big Beat reissued it on the "Four on the floor" EP. A great rockabilly high school punk version of a song made famous by Dion & The Belmonts in 1958, but did you know that the original title was "It's great to be young and in love"?

7. yes i do - the boonaraaas

Many girl garage bands have played "Yes I do". This 1997 Thunderbaby release is one of the heaviest by trashgarage girls The Boonaraaas from Germany. Also live a band you must have seen at least once.

15. misunderstood - the chinese millionaires

The Saints song and not to be confused with "Don't let me be minsunderstood". Hailing from Michigan this foursome recorded one album and at least four 45s in 1995-1998. This EP was issued by the Belgian label Demolition Derby in 1997. It also features a Sex Pistols cover, an MC5 cover and finally one by The Rolling Stones.

8. yes i do - the diaboliks

Also The Boonaraaas, a German girl outfit, recorded this song, but two years after this 1995 release on Screaming Apple, another German label. The Diaboliks were three girls and one guy. Anja, Sophie and Babz with guitarist Dan. Great band, also live.

16. misunderstood - nashville pussy

A surprising choice for a cover was this one, originally by Australian punk band The Saints. Blaine, Corey, Ruyter and Adam Neal instead of Jeremy Thompson on drums sound here like an American version of Cosmic Psychos. Fantastic 1998 release on Black Lung.
