LOOK WHAT I COULD FIND vol 48
"Horror tunes 1" - 16 creatures craving for your brain

In The Trashcan Records       GEM048
"The legends of werewolves and haunted houses by zombies with guitars on a graveyard..."

1. haunted melody - the frantic v

Exactly what it is, a haunted melody by a ghastly garage combo from Greece. In 1994 they recorded their best EP for Corduroy Records. Moody yet haunted instrumental from the catacombs of Thessaloniki.

9. the creeps - psychotic turnbuckles

Mix Radio Birdman and The Cramps and you'll get "The Creeps" with Psychotic Turnbuckles, an Australian garage rock outfit from Barangaroo, New South Wales. This is their first 45 from 1985, on Vi-Nil Records.

2. haunted house - the otherside

Okay, I cheated… Of course this song already appeared on a compilation (Battle of the garages vol 4), but I simply had to include it here as it is the best garage song from the 80s coming from Holland, written by singer Michel Terstegen. Founded in 1983 in Amsterdam by Michel who passed away in 2011, age 51. In 2000 he was in a band called Ron & The Splinters, another ode to the best Dutch 60s band, The Outsiders. Released in 1985 by Kelt Records.

10. creepy thing - the worst

Snotty teen fuzz punker from British Columbia, Canada. Like a bunch of zombies full of green slime and festering fuzz to melt your brain. One of 1992's best garage songs! See also vol 24 for another song from this 4-track EP on Screaming Apple.

3. kiss of the werewolf - the percolators

After their Cramps tribute (see vol 46) they became Meteors addicts as if it were "Voodoo rhythm" time again. In 1993 Mental Disorder released their second EP.

11. do the ghost - the x-men

Psychotic garage rock on Creation Records in 1984? True! Ready to "Do the ghost"? I know I am! See also vol 8 for the flipside.

4. werewolf - the lust-o-rama

Originally an instrumental by The Frantics from 1960, used by The Cramps for their own "Don't eat stuff off the sidewalk". This Norwegian combo, however, decided to turn it into an uptempo horror monster instro. A 1992 Estrus release.

12. the legend of sleepy hollow - larry winther & the mummies

Recorded live in 1989 by The Mummies with Larry Winther, whom we see again later in The Orange Peels.  Originally by The Last Word. This version, however, was released by Planet Pimp Records in 1992.

5. werewolf from outer space - the neanderthals

Written, sung and released by Eddie Angel in 1994 on Spinout Records. I once had the chance to talk to him when they were at Tiki's in Gierle, Belgium, although they didn't play their gig as they arrived 5 hours too late thanks to a blizzard in Germany. Fantastic horror frat rock recorded in Toe-Rag Studios and produced by Liam Watson. See vol 28 for the flipside.

13. the creature from the black lagoon - the monsters

The official title of this EP is "The Monsters meet Betty Pages of fright". It's my Monsters favourite from 1992 and actually my very first Monsters record; what a discovery it was. A thousand copies were pressed by Dionysus Records. They reminded me of the early Meteors when Nigel Lewis was still in that band. See also vol 46.

6. goin' to a graveyard - the witch doctors

Great garage rock outfit that only released two 45s and one album. Organ player Jake Cavaliere later formed The Lords Of Altamont. This is perhaps the best Halloween influenced song by a 90s garage band. A 1994 Screaming Apple release. See also vol 24.

14. thoughts of a hangman - thee headcoats

How fantastic is this EP on Royal Records! In 1993 Thee Headcoats could be contacted via Hangman Books in Rochester, Kent, where you could buy the thoughts of a hangman. Top Medway garage killer!

7. rockin' in the graveyard - sin alley

I first heard about Jackie Morningstar in a Cramps interview and then I found his 45 "Rockin' in the graveyard". Years later, in 1994, a Belgian psychobilly-garage outfit also played this tune. A few years after they played support for the Cramps on their Belgian gig in Brussels. And again a few years later Sin Alley broke up and a new band was formed: Triggerfinger. The A-side can be found on vol 14.

15. bewitched - the squares

Together with The Gorgons they were the best Medway garage punk band from France. They hailed from Nancy, recorded five albums and a handful of singles for various record labels. This one is a 1994 Royal Records release. See also vol 54.

8. graveyard stomp - the meteors

The flipside to "Radioactive kid", and that's why this is the best two-sider by The Meteors. Both sides have become psychobilly standards. It's 1981 and the English rockabilly lovers wanted something wilder than The Stray Cats and less obscure than The Cramps as they wanted to stomp and stroll on a graveyard, not be eaten alive by zombies.

16. zombie a-go-go - the fiends

Halloween utlra-fuzz garage stuff from 1993 on Primitive Records. This Canadian band surprised me with their 1994 album on Music Maniac and I was happy to find out they had already a single released.
