LOOK WHAT I COULD FIND vol 39
"Juke box animals 1" - 16 tunes about monkeys, donkeys, chickens and more

"You must fight to live on the planet of people who believe that 7inch is not a record but a normal sized..."

1. gorilla takes a bath - jay phlitman & kim kangaroo

Belgian weirdness from this Flemish duo. Kim Kangaroo was also in Les Chiens Comiques, whose EP was Lama's first label release. Also in that band was Dirk Swartenbroeckx aka Buscemi. Released in 1997 by Lama Records in a limited edition of 400 numbered copies.

9. you must fight to live on the planet of the apes - the mummies

Legendary Californian trash rockers with their best known song. Recorded in 1993 and released by Sympathy For The Record Industry. Perhaps also their best sold record.

2. go go gorilla - cheater slicks

Boston band with a Melbourne release. Dog Meat was one of Australia's best known secrets. Each and every release turned out to be a must have. This heavy version of The Shandells' classic garage stomper "Go Go Gorilla" from 1990 is the best this garage rock outfit from Massachusetts ever produced. Later they relocated to Ohio and released more than a dozen albums.

10. monkey changes everything - the smiths

I never was a Morrissey fan and only two Smiths songs are really interesting to me, but this instrumental, written by Johnny Marr, was a nice discovery, as B-side of "Bigmouth strikes again" in 1986. A good excuse to include this monkey song here.

3. orang-outang - baby birkin

Originally by Serge Gainsbourg, this Medway combo recorded it in 1997 for Damaged Goods on a splitsingle with Dutronc. More from this excellent band on vol 32s and 65.

11. the donkey - the car thieves

In the 90s a lot of lo-fi trash rock 'n' roll record labels appeared, almost simultaneously, like mushrooms, including the amazing Radio X from South City in California. The best song on this 4-track EP is "The donkey".

4. do the monkey - mad 3

Debut 45s by this Tokyo trash garage combo, trying to mix Tokyo and Tex-Mex into a monkey jungle tune while listening to "The crusher" by The Novas. It's so wrong it's fabulous. A 1992 release on Giant Claw. See also vol 63 for the flipside.

12. white mice - mo-dettes

Strong debut single by a band that started as The Bomberettes, but turned into Mo-Dettes. American guitarist Kate "Korus" Corris was a founding member of The Slits, maybe that's why they were compared with bands like The Slits, The Au-Pairs and The Go-Go's.  Released on their own Mode label in 1979.

5. monkey - thee cherylinas

90's girl garage outfit on German all-girl record label Thunderbaby Records from Düsseldorf. Freakoid Hammond wah-wah popsike garage by 5 young German monkey lovers.

13. chicken shit - ze noiz

My favourite John Cale song covered by a Belgian rock band, featuring Frank "Zaman" Haelman, Rik Vermeir (Golden Green), Rico and a couple more. Released on Green Records in 1989.

6. the red monkey - thee milkshakes

A 1981 Link Wray-ish instrumental by Billy Childish' second band and also released on an EP in 1992, but it first appeared on the fantastic album "Fourteen rhythm & beat greats" on Wall City, reissued on Big Beat. I wonder what is the story behind this red monkey.

14. chicken dance - the bradipos iv

Italian garage band with a scorching instrumental from 1997 released on their "Beach fool" EP by Kill Yourself Punkarrecords from Parma. They can't deny they listened a lot to Tequila.

7. swingin' ape - los kogars

The French answer to The Phantom Surfers, Los Kogars were avid fans of the crazy movie "Rat fink a boo boo" and also Ron Haydock (this EP is a tribute to that wild rocker who gave us "99 chicks" in 1959). This jungle surf instrumental was released in 1995 on Planet Pimp, owned by Sven-Erik Geddes from San Francisco, home of ... The Phantom Surfers.

15. barracuda - the 5.6.7.8's

Another Time Bomb release by our fave female Jap garage band. Ronnie and the two other girls are helped out by The Mummies' Russel Quan on this 1997 release about the most ferocious predator in the deep blue sea.

8. orangutang - bow wow wow

Moody twangy 1981 instrumental B-side of "Prince of darkness" by Malcolm McLaren protégées including Annabella, a young teenage girl as singer, who was from Burmese descent. Are there orangutangs in Myanmar?

16. the beast no.2 - radio stars

Formed in 1977 and picked up by Chiswick Records that would release 6 singles and 2 albums. This is the flipside to "From a rabbit", but actually it's a new version of their "The beast of Barnsley", which was featured on the 1977 album "Songs for swinging lovers". The band was formed by ex-John's Children Andy Ellison, who left Jet to form Radio Stars. Perfect song to end this animalistic volume.
