LOOK WHAT I COULD FIND vol 6
" '82 was crazy too" - 16 examples of indie war"

In The Trashcan Records       GEM006
"When a third wave of punk rock bands arose and postpunk bands had their second life, their struggle gave us terrific tunes to get crazy by..."

1. spirit - bauhaus

Featuring the iconic face of Bauhaus on the sleeve, it's amongst their most accessible songs, released on Beggars Banquet. B-side is a live version of "Terror couple kill colonel".

9. floorshow - the sisters of mercy

You love 'em or you hate 'em. The Sisters from Leeds are/were a legend. They are gothic gods to some. As B-side of their indie smash hit "Alice", "Floorshow" got less attention than it surely deserved. Singer Andrew Eldritch hardly ever sounded better. Released on their own label Merciful Release.
2. brilliant - killing joke

One of Killing Joke's most menacing songs. As flip to their 1982 indie chart tip "Empire song" it never got any airplay at all, perhaps because it is a slow and ark instrumental.

10. computers don't blunder - the exploited

Best known punk band from Scotland, this Edinburgh foursome started in 1979. It's their 6th single release already and their 3rd on Secret. Terry "Wattie" Buchan is The Exploited. Almost 40 guys have been been a member of this ever changing band. They're still around and very popular.
3. angleland - the passage

The faster A-side "Wave" never got quite my attention. It's this flip that interested me. Paul Mahoney, Andrew Wilson and Dick Witts are The Passage, hailing from Manchester. This electro postpunk combo released four albums in 1980-1983 and twice as much 45s in the same period.

11. run like hell - peter & the test tube babies

No Future was one of Britain's best punk labels. And "Banned from the pubs" one of their best releases. Here's Peter & The Test Tube Babies with their follow-up 45. It was Sue Wade who ran their fan club in Brighton.
4. reach out - wasted youth

This self-penned, self-produced 45 is for me the best release by this London band. Their psychedelic new wave period ended in 1982 with this single, their 5th on Bridge House. Also two studio albums and one live album followed. Highly underestimated.
12. man-trap - gbh

Clay Records was the label of Discharge and it was that band that discovered the potentials of GBH (formerly known as Charged GBH), a band formed in 1978 that was the heaviest punk band in 1982. They mixed early Oi with fast Motörhead guitars. This is the B-side of "Give me fire", their 3rd release for Clay. The band is still touring!
5. if you can't stand up - the members

Clash-styled dub funk influences are not so uncommon with this UK band from Camberley, best known for their punk hit "The sound of the suburbs", although I prefer "Offshore banking business" and "Solitary confinement". It's one of their last releases, on Island. Founded in 1976 and reunited in 2007 after a 24 year break.
13. victimised - chaos uk

Riot City Records was another legendary UK punk label in the early 80s. This EP was the debut for this Bristol punk band, formed in 1979. On the EP there is their signature song "Four minute warning".
6. arty-fact - group therapy

Kamera Records was a very obscure label although they had an outstanding output, including The Fall, The Au Pairs, Allez Allez and even New York Dolls. This is the only Group Therapy release I know. They came from Grimsby, UK.
14. manzanar - channel 3

Back to No Future Records although this release was licensed from Poshboy Records, a seminal punk label from the US, that released their first and third 45. This is from their second release, "I've got a gun".
7. running to the night - cinq cheveaux

Here's again a band from Belgium, also known as 5CV. Killing Joke guitars, silly sounding Belgian English lyrics. It's their first of three 45s, this being released on their own 5CV label.
15. the last cowboy - dead mans shadow

The fourth release by this UK band and their second on Rondelet. In 1984 this punk band recorded their second and last album "To Mohammed a mountain".
8. sweet revenge - the neon judgement

It's the flipside of their debut 45. Neon Judgement were, together with Front 242, the godfathers of Belgium's underground scene of electronic body music. Released on the influential Antler Records. They came from the university town of Leuven.
16. for you - the anti-nowhere league

I only know WXYZ Records from their releases of The Defects, The Meteors and this band. It's their fourth and last release for this label. Surprisingly this 45 was produced by Vic Maile, who was the sound engineer for bands such as The Who, Hawkwind, Motörhead, Eddie & The Hot Rods, Dr. Feelgood, and dozens of other artists.
